Literacy Focus
In the fall of 2005, Risen Christ School became the only non-public school in the state to participate in the Reading First program, using methods formulated for Minnesota Reading First schools by the University of Minnesota.

Teachers in Grades K-3 reviewed and made changes to the way they did reading instruction, using research-based best practices. The use of data to monitor each student’s progress and to drive instruction has become a cornerstone of our work at Risen Christ.

Beginning in the fall of 2008, we implemented a literacy plan that expanded the Reading First model to Grades 4-8. A key part of the program was providing all teachers access to the latest reading research through Professional Learning Communities within our school.

This professional learning model includes teacher-to-teacher mentoring, sharing of ideas, videotaping of teachers and instruction on how to interpret and utilize testing data in order to differentiate teaching methods to individual students. We are dedicated to helping each child achieve appropriate yearly gains in their reading, as measured by both standardized tests scores and their academic progress in all areas.

Discipline With Purpose
We believe that the purpose of discipline is to develop mature attitudes and socially acceptable standards of conduct that reflect love of self and love of neighbor.  We seek to find a way to teach responsibility and respect in language children can understand.  As Catholics and as Christians it is our desire to become more like Christ.

Each student is responsible for his or her own behavior. Therefore, discipline should not be confused with punishment. Whenever possible there shall be a logical relationship between the student’s behavior and the disciplinary action taken.  Our philosophy of discipline takes into account our Statement of Rights and our Statement of Responsibilities.

In order to nurture and promote self-discipline in our school community, we model and teach the skills of self-discipline as outlined in the national “Discipline With Purpose” program. Using age-appropriate lessons, students are instructed in the use of 15 skills of self-discipline. These 15 skills provide daily opportunities for students to think and make judgments about how they should act to model self directed behavior.

For a more complete explanation of Discipline With Purpose, please see the “Discipline” section of the Parent Handbook.
